John Mulhall was an Irish Immigrant who came to Omaha in 1953, in love with the
city's shade trees and stayed to found one of Omaha's largest nurseries.John
who was 80 years old pass on, at home of natural causes.
He was born in 1922 on a farm 40 miles North of Dublin.
John studied horticulture at University College in Dublin on a scholarship
and took a gardening job at the U.S. Embassy. The a ambassador at the time
was Francis Matthews o Omaha. It was the ambassbor's son who suggested
that John come to Omaha.
John was a very hard worker, spent two years at the Hanscom Park Greenhouse.
He spent four years at Creighton University beautifying it's campus with trees,
shrubs and flowers.
"My job was to try to make a beautiful campus in the middle of a concrete
jungle" he said in a 1992 interview. "I tried to make it as people
oriented as I could"
John opened his own landscaping business in the family garage at 51st and
Fort Streets in 1956. In 1964, he moved the business to a two acre site on
69th and Blondo Streets. In 1974 Mulhall's relocated to a 180 acre site at
120th and West Maple Streets. In season the nursery employs more than 300
people.
"John was a visionary who championed urban green spaces, and the value of
parks," said John Fech an extension educator in Douglas and Sarpy
Counties. "John readily shared his vast knowledge of landscape plant
materials and worked hard to advance good horticulture. He was a fiery ambitious
forward thinking guy." Fech said "My life is much richer for having known
him."
Active in threater in his youth, John played the accordion, sang Irish songs
wrote and recited poetry, and told stories in his lilting accent. He admitted to
being demanding and impatient, but he was a charming and an entertaining friend
who was proud of his heritage.
